This is because there are other things that can definitely negate our ability to lose weight – and one very important aspect is our hormonal balance…one huge but often overlooked reason for weight loss resistance.


The four biggest hormone contributors to fat gain and fat loss resistance are insulin, sex hormones, cortisol (stress hormones) and thyroid.


Below I have listed the testing you can have ordered through your Dr or Naturopath to assess your hormonal balance and why they are an important factor for your fat loss goals.


Insulin Resistance

Excess insulin will decrease fat loss ability and increase fat storage. Insulin is responsible for muscle growth and muscle glycogen storage making it an extremely important hormone to have functioning optimally.


Order blood tests through your Dr. to test the following levels:

  • Insulin

  • Glucose

  • Lipid Profile


Sex Hormones

Sex hormones including estrogen, testosterone, progesterone and DHEA can play a major role in impacting your ability to lose and maintain your weight. Too much estrogen relative to progesterone (estrogen dominance) often leads to weight gain. This is because estrogen dominance can lead to insulin resistance which causes the body to store fat. Estrogen dominance also slows down the thyroid gland, which decreases metabolism. Testosterone and DHEA often decrease as we age slowing muscle growth and increasing fat storage.


Order blood tests through your Dr. to test the following levels:

  • DHEA-S

  • Free and total Testosterone

  • Oestradiol (E2)

  • Progesterone


Cortisol

When hormones are level cortisol is protective and burns fat, however high levels of cortisol can trigger your body to store additional fat, especially around your abdomen.


Order blood tests through your Dr. to test the following levels:

  • Cortisol (note: it is most accurate to test this using a saliva test rather than a blood or urine test)


Thyroid

A complex relationship exists between your thyroid, metabolism, and weight. Did you know hyperthyroidism can be linked to underlying gluten intolerances?

  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

  • Free T3

  • Free T4

  • Reverse T3



Another Important factor I didn’t mention is Inflammation!


Inflammation

Inflammation, anaemia, and vitamin D status are all important weight loss markers.

  • FBC (Full Blood Count)

  • E/LFT (electrolytes and liver function tests)

  • Vitamin D

  • Iron studies

  • B12/folic acid

  • C-Reactive Protein

Once your purchase is complete I will email you through a client questionnaire. This will provide me with the information I need to accurately calculate your personal nutrition and / or training requirements based on your current physique, diet history, exercise regime and goals.


I will check in with you once per fortnight. You will be required to complete an athlete check in which will include your current weight, measurements and photos as well as a few other questions, which I will use to analyse your progress and make the necessary adjustments. This will ensure continual progression towards your goals.
